Perdido condo honors local businesses
Brian Kelly

Bill Peacock of Milton Carpet Center was among a group
of Pensacola and Gulf Coast contractors who were honored
on Wednesday during an Appreciation Party at The Palms
of Perdido Key. The 23-unit, luxury condominium building
is the newest addition to Perdido Key.

The developers of The Palms, Dick and Teresa Domurat,
said they consider themselves fortunate to have found a
local talent pool of very qualified individuals and
businesses.

"This is really a night to honor the local contractors,"
said Teresa Domurat, co-developer. "We wanted to use
them wherever we could, when a special expertise was
required then we'd have to look elsewhere, but for the
most part, we stayed local.

"Tonight we wanted to honor those that helped Dick and
me achieve our vision for this building. The objective
was to create an upscale building, nothing like it
around here, and we did it with the help of each local
contractor."

Long-time resident of Perdido Key, Dick Domurat
conceived, designed, and developed the project with
Teresa, his wife and business partner.

"We wanted as much of our expenditure as possible to
stay within our own community," he said. "We were elated
to find so many local and Gulf Coast businesses that
were both competitive and highly qualified."

The Palms' objectives focused on targeting a discerning
market of buyers for the units priced from $1.38 million
to $3.4 million. The design and construction of the
project required contractors and specialty tradespersons
capable of attention to detail and high quality
craftsmanship.

The prime contractor on the building was Brasfield &
Gorrie, who has performed much work in the Pensacola
area.

As for Peacock of Milton Carpet Center, he said he's
proud to have his company's name attached to the
project.

"We did the tile, carpet and all the hard wood
flooring," Peacock said. "Teresa dictated a lot of the
design, and we began looking at the process of flooring
two years before breaking ground on the building, so
we're proud to be part of this amazing building."

During the appreciation ceremony, the contractors were
awarded Certificates of Award for the businesses and
trades that contributed to certain quality objectives
set forth by the development at the outset of the
construction project.

The Domurats had lived for more than two decades at
the very site of The Palms. A few years ago, the couple
acquired the property and some adjacent land, cleared it
and began construction. For them, it was the perfect
opportunity to realize their dream of developing an
upscale, luxurious residential building on Perdido Key.

"We spent four decades in the commercial design
business, so we knew how to construct a quality
condominium," Dick Domurat said. "This is an elegant and
upscale residential building that we are very proud of.
There's nothing like this from here to Mississippi."

And the hiring of local contractors hasn't stopped with
the completion of the building.

Clint Baptiste, owner of Performance Area Maintenance,
will look after one of the condominium's landscape gems.

"My company will be maintaining the three outdoor
pools," Baptiste said. "I knew Teresa when she was
living in La Riva, and was cleaning there, so she hired
me on to take care of their pools. I'm happy about
that."
